BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 to launch on-demand content service.

BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 to launch on-demand content serviceBBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 today announced the creation of a commercial three-way joint venture to launch an on-demand content service in 2008 with the working title of 'Kangaroo'.

The service will bring together an exciting collection of over ten thousand hours of the very best of the UK broadcasters' current and archive programming, with the convenience, simplicity and ease of use of one overarching service.

These plans are subject to formal approval from the BBC Trust and each broadcaster's board.

Initially the service will launch as a web based proposition and will be available for distribution on other platforms. Content will be available both streamed and downloaded and viewers will be able to watch for free, rent or buy. A name and brand for the new service will be unveiled before launch.

John Smith, Chief Executive Officer of BBC Worldwide said: "This is a historic partnership between the UK's largest broadcasters. For some time we have wanted to form an alliance with other rights holders in the UK and give viewers an on-demand service with real added value."

"The new service will contain some of the very best of the UK's content for consumers to view in one place, which will be both easy to use and great fun. By combining our joint resources we're really taking control of our destiny in a market that’s moving at a fast pace."

The new service will complement BBC iPlayer, the free catch-up TV service offering hundreds of programmes a week from the last seven days. BBC iPlayer content will be listed within the new service. ITV.com will continue to feature a 30 day catch up facility alongside simulcasts of ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 and a wealth of news, clips, stills, exclusive content and interactivity across and around ITV programming.

The joint venture has appointed Lesley MacKenzie as Launch CEO and is currently recruiting top executives to lead the joint venture team. Previously Lesley was in India launching TataSky and prior to this was Director of Channels and Operations at BSkyB.

Search for the Best Virtual Footballer

Search for the Best Virtual FootballerThe virtual football season is heating up as gamers and football fans around the world are getting ready for the next stage of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. Since the launch of FIFA 08 last month, over 10,000 players from 25 countries and five continents have started battling for top position on the leader board in the online part of the competition via PLAYSTATION®Network. This month, the first live qualifying events have kicked off in Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary and will move on to Korea, Portugal and a total of over 20 locations across the world over the next five months in search for the world’s best interactive footballer.

“The FIFA Interactive World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for all football fans to show off their skills and passion for the sport with FIFA 08,” said Ronaldinho. “It is a great tournament in which you have to train and work hard to succeed – just like in real football, so I invite all fans to register and enjoy this party of interactive football.”

On the 24th of May 2008, the 32 finalists will travel to Berlin from the four corners of the world to compete at the Sony Centre for the ultimate title of FIFA Interactive World Player 2008. The winner will receive an invitation to the FIFA World Player Gala 2008 and a cash prize of USD 20,000. The first players to have qualified for the Grand Final are 15 year old Christian Lønhart from Bagsværd in Copenhagen and Roland Császár (17) from Budapest. The Dutch qualifying event was won by last year’s FIFA Interactive World Cup winner Andries Smit (18) from The Hague, Netherlands who secured his spot in the Grand Final for the second time in a row following a tense qualifying match yesterday.

Players who think they have what it takes to become one of the 32 finalists can register for the online qualification modus or find out about a qualifying event near them at www.FIFA.com/FIWC.

The FIFA Interactive World Cup is the world’s only officially FIFA sanctioned global football gaming competition with presenting partners EA and PlayStation. Participants from around the world compete with EA’s FIFA 08 on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). This year, players can participate at one of more than 20 physical FIWC 08 Qualifier Events across the globe or online via the PLAYSTATION®Network in over 25 countries.

Sky's move to GMail migration nightmare

Sky's move to GMail migration nightmareSky's customer support has been suffering from an ever increasing number of support calls after the planned migration of its web mail system to GMail has caused headaches for some customers.

Sky announced its intention to move to Google's e-mail system earlier in the year, and switched a million users over at the start of November. Sky asked these customers to make changes to e-mail software such as pop3 server information and port numbers for themselves, as well as enabling POP3 access on the Gmail account. But the instructions sent out to customers were too complicated for some, leaving many without access to their emails.

"So why didn't Sky give its customers the tools to help them out rather than leave them on their own?" asks one blogger.

The poorly planned migration has led to criticism for not planning the move more carefully.
