Dell and Microsoft offer RED products in the fight against AIDS.

Dell and Microsoft offer RED products in the fight against AIDSDell and Microsoft are offering customers a simple way to make a difference in the fight against AIDS in Africa through the purchase of unique RED branded personal computers.

At this time Dell RED products are only available from Dell and Best Buy stores in the United States, but by the end of January they will also be available through Dell in nearly 30 additional countries.

(RED) was established to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund, to help fight AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the RED mark contribute a significant percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programs in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children. To date, (RED) partners have contributed more than $57 million to the Global Fund based on the sale of RED products.

With each purchase of a RED branded Dell personal computer including Windows Vista Ultimate RED, Dell and Microsoft will make a combined contribution of between $50 to $80 into the Global Fund, depending on the PC purchased.

Seagate start to ship 250GB Momentus Notebook Hard Drives.

250GB Momentus Notebook Hard DriveSeagate has announced that it is currently shipping a new 250GB notebook drive that delivers a compelling combination of capacity, performance and durability for mobile computing.

The new Momentus® 5400.4 hard drive is part of the world’s most innovative family of notebook drives, which includes the Momentus® 5400 FDE.2 hard drive, the industry’s first notebook HDD with built-in encryption.

Independent research firm IDC puts Seagate’s worldwide share for 2.5-inch notebook PC and PC-related* hard drives for the first three quarters of calendar 2007 at 19%, a share that elevated Seagate to the number two spot.

“In the five years that Seagate has offered hard drives for notebook PCs, it has become a contender for the notebook market share crown,” said John Rydning, research manager for hard disk drives at IDC. “Seagate’s product breadth and customer responsiveness have contributed significantly to the company’s ascent in this market.”

“Personal computing is the core of the digital experience as users continue to use their PCs as the hub for storing, sharing, syncing and protecting their digital content,” said Michael Wingert, general manager of Seagate’s Personal Compute business. “Seagate is pleased to be at the forefront in enabling mobile computing that gives business users and consumers the freedom they need to bring the digital world to their fingertips.”

Seagate believe that the Momentus 5400.4 hard drive is perfect for mainstream laptops, performance-hungry gaming systems, workstations and personal external storage.

The 2.5-inch, 5400-rpm giant features 250GB of capacity on just two disc platters and, like the rest of the Momentus series, is lean on power consumption, allowing notebook users to work longer between battery charges. And the drive is virtually inaudible thanks to Seagate’s innovative SoftSonic™ fluid-dynamic bearing motors and QuietStep™ ramp load technology.

Malware now targeting S60 mobiles phones

Symbian S60 Malware out in the wild.

Symbian S60F-Secure has today been reporting that two variants of a new mobile phone worm have been discovered in the wild.

The SymbOS/Beselo family of worms, comprising of Beselo.A and Beselo.B, have been infecting S60 2nd Edition phones, and is spreading via MMS and Bluetooth when users are tricked into running an incoming Symbian application installer (.sis) file.

The malware never advertises itself as such, preferring to use common media extensions and vaguely enticing filenames, such as beauty.jpg, sex.mp3, and love.rm.

F-Secure has noted that both worms have been able to escape operator and antivirus company attention for some time by employing this simple disguise.

F-Secure has advised users of S60 phones to reject any installation prompt that appears when trying to open a media file such as jpg, mp3, or rm.

"There is no reason for any image file to ask installation questions on the Symbian platform, so any image or sound file that does something else than play immediately is without question something else than it claims to be," the company writes on its blog.
